Together they immigrated from Zurich, Switzerland in 1982 seeking the open spaces
and peaceful lifestyle offered in Australia.
After traveling for seven months they settled in the town of Denmark, as they found
its lush hills and friendly community similar to what they called home, only with
the added beauty of the ocean nearby.
Being relatively inexperienced in the art of wine making,
they teamed up with their good friend Angelo Scifoni, who has had extensive experience
in producing preservative free wine and is now a partner in business.
The grapes
were planted in 2000 and yielded their first vintage in 2004. They have produced
Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc under the Monkey Rock
label.
The name is derived from a nearby landmark, a large rock resembling a monkey
face, on Mt Hallowell.
